The initial recording was made in 1923 by Abe Lyman and His Orchestra. That same year, a rendition by Benny Krueger and His Orchestra climbed to the number two spot on the U.S. charts, where it remained for two weeks and stayed on the charts for a total of ten weeks. Another interpretation of the song by the Columbians also made its mark in 1923, reaching number 14 for one week. Fast forward to 1938, and two new recordings ascended to number 13 on the Billboard charts - one by Bunny Berigan and His Orchestra, featuring Kathleen Lane on vocals, and another by Bing Crosby. The following year, Glen Gray and his Casa Loma Orchestra's version reached number 6. In 1942, a recording by Harry James was the last to make an appearance on the Billboard charts, peaking at number 19.
"I Cried for You" has also been showcased in several films, including the musical short "Alladin from Manhattan" (1936) featuring Ruth Etting, "The Women" (1939), "Idiot's Delight" (1939), and "Babes in Arms" (1939) where it was performed by Judy Garland. In 1944, Helen Forrest sang it alongside Harry James and His Music Makers in "Bathing Beauty". Frank Sinatra delivered his interpretation of the song in "The Joker Is Wild" (1957), and Diana Ross performed it in "Lady Sings the Blues" (1972) as a tribute to Billie Holiday.
