"At about 5 o'clock, on an afternoon last October, I was at The White House in Washington, D.C. We were having tea and there was a long reception line waiting to meet Mr. Roosevelt. I was at the nd of the line. I guess I was pretty nervous and excited. Of course., knowing the President as worrying about the war and everything, naturally, I expected a nod, a quick handshake, and that would be it. But when I finally stood there, face to face with the great man, he gave me a big smile and said, 'Well! Well! Look who's here!' He asked me to sit down. After we talked for a while, he leaned over very confidentially and said, ' Say, Frank, if I promise not to tell anybody will you let me know what is going to be number one on the Hit Parade next week?' We laughed and then we got to talking about what were the president's favorite songs. He told me he liked the music of Stephen Foster, "Goin' Home”, from "The New World Symphony," and, of course, "Home On the Range." We talked about fishing for a while. He asked about Nancy and the kids. He said he had heard a rumor that we were expecting a new addition to the family. Well, sir, I practically fell out of my chair. I couldn't conceive of the President of the United States should know about personal things like that. Just before we left The White House, Mr. Roosevelt called me aside and said, ' I see by the papers that you've been working pretty hard. I think maybe you better take it easy and be careful." When I walked down the steps of The White House, I rather felt as if I were in a dream, as if it had never really happened. But you see Mr. Roosevelt was interested in everybody, with all the problems of the war and the peace, he took the trouble to worry about whether a crooner from New Jersey was working too hard. I was with him for a very short time but he seemed like a father to me. As a matter of fact, I guess he was like a father to almost everybody in the whole world. So, Dear God, please take good care of him for us, because we know he took good care of us for you."

Hommage an Franklin D. Roosevelt, der am 12. April 1945 starb
